Abstract

This symposium examines how cognition and action intersect in the origins of strategy and the strategic implications of this interplay. Although interest in these issues has intensified, research remains fragmented across distinct strategy traditions – microfoundations, behavioral strategy, and strategy-as-practice (SAP) – that differ in their onto-epistemic assumptions and methodological approaches. Addressing this fragmentation, the symposium brings together scholars from these communities to explore the foundational origins of strategy emergence and to foster dialogue and cross-fertilization between behavioral and practice-based perspectives. The symposium highlights both tensions and complementarities among these traditions. By engaging ongoing debates and shared concerns, the symposium aims to clarify how greater collaboration between behavioral strategy and SAP scholars can advance theory and empirics on strategy origins and developments. In doing so, it seeks to generate new avenues for collaborative research on how cognition and action co-constitute strategy in organizations.
