Abstract
Crowdfunding has thus far been run by stand-alone crowdfunding platforms, many of them formed by for-profit companies. However, a number of universities have begun to start their own platforms. These «corporate crowdfunding» platforms are likely to have more resources at their disposal than stand-alone platforms but less flexibility as the overarching organization exerts control and decision-making over crowdfunding projects. This paper examines a university-operated crowdfunding platform called CrowdUni. It discusses existing literature around platforms and the creation of platform ecosystems, before linking the platform to corporate entrepreneurship. It then goes on to theorize around the impact that being housed inside an existing organization may have on the functioning of the platform and resulting platform ecosystem, before presenting some initial findings.
