Abstract
The original Swedish translation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby from 1928 is curiously titled En man utan skrupler (А Man Without Scruples). Overlooked in scholarship, this early translation of the novel appears to morally judge its main character, in marked contrast to the original that lauds him as great. The title choice is not only puzzling, but also would seem to violate the integrity of Fitzgerald's work. This impression is complicated, however, by the magazine serialization of the translation that preceded its publication in book form, whose presentation suggests that the title not be taken at face value. Ultimately, the Swedish title may not be judgmental, but rather contain a logic of a different kind, albeit one that has been lost to time.
