Abstract
I estimate the impact of swarms of desert locusts on individuals in the Sahel region. Desert locusts are a common pest in large parts of Africa that can destroy harvests, thereby causing negative income shocks to farmers and reducing food supplies in affected regions. I show that locust swarms cause a loss of body weight among women as well as among children. This is the first time that the impact of locust swarms on affected populations has been quantified.
