My current research focuses on three main areas. Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, I have developed a research agenda on economic sanctions, including work on the emergence and operation of Russia’s shadow fleet and on measuring the extent to which export restrictions are circumvented through trade rerouting via third countries.

A second strand of my research examines Russian geopolitical influence in Africa, using both observational data and survey experiments to study influence strategies and responses to them.

Finally, my work in gender economics currently includes two randomized controlled trials: one studying domestic violence in the context of Ukraine’s recent legislative reform, and another examining the gender gap in STEM participation among secondary-school students in Armenia.
