Three Caribbean Marxists and a Visionary
Published 2024
The present book collects four essays around the common theme of Caribbean radicalism. It deals with three modern Marxists and a religious visionary who was active during the early twentieth century. The first essay is about the classic chronicle of the Haitian revolution by C.L.R. James: The Black Jacobins, specifically about the role and ideology of Toussaint Louverture. The second chapter outlines the views of Clive Thomas about the economic problems of the West Indies and his idea for change from what he perceived as a position of dependence. The third essay examines the analysis by Gérard Pierre-Charles of the predatory regimes of Francois and Jean-Claude Duvalier in Haiti: the rise, characteristics and effects of 'Papadocracy', and presents his own solution of the crisis in Haiti which had gradually built up during the 1960s. Finally, the chapter on Olivorio Mateo relates how he founded a religious movement in the Dominican republic, how this was suppressed by the U.S. Marines in 1922, how the movement resurfaced at the beginning of the 1960s and how it was massacred by the Dominican military. It stresses the importance of economic factors for the success of the movement.

Haiti: The Country that God Forgot
Published 2023
Haiti: The Country that God Forgot deals with some of the most important reasons for the present chaotic state of affairs in Haiti. The chapters of the book were written between 2012 and 2022. During that period, the economic, political and social situation in Haiti underwent a drastic degeneration. The spiral of violence which accelerated after the murder of president Moïse in 2021 continues its movement. In 2023, there is no question about the fact that Haiti has turned into a failed state, a state that threatens to collapse completely.

Published 2022
This book explores the economic work and legacy of Bo Södersten. While best known internationally for his textbook International Economics, Södersten’s influence stretches well beyond this. This book aims to provide insight into the motivations and impact of Bo Södersten during each phase of his life: his academic career, his political life, and his time as a debater-provocateur. It will be relevant to students and researchers interested in Swedish economics, the history of economic thought, and international economics.

This book explores the development of economic thought in Sweden through some of the people who shaped it. The book highlights both some of the well-known contributions and some overlooked areas of research. It begins with the origins of the pioneer neoclassical Heckscher-Ohlin theorem and Gunnar Myrdal ’s circular, cumulative approach to economic development. Secondly, it focuses on a number of economists related to the Industrial Institute of Economic and Social Research: Ingvar Svennilson, Axel Iveroth, Jan Wallander, Erik Höök, Villy Bergström and Rolf Henriksson. Finally, it offers portraits of three economists from Lund University: Bo Södersten, Ingemar Ståhl and Göte Hansson. The work of all of them is placed within the context of the contemporary academic and public economic debate. This book aims at providing a perspective on the legacy of the Swedish tradition in economics and will be relevant to students and academics interested in the history of economic thought.

The Creation of the East Timorese Economy Vol. 1: History of a Colony
Published 2019
This two-volume study explores the economy of East Timor, of which very little has been written since the country gained independence in 2002. Currently, no comprehensive account exists of the economic history of the country. The former cannot be properly understood without a knowledge of the historical process that created the present-day situation. This research monograph is the first book to combine a historical analysis of the creation and development of the economy of East Timor from the earliest times to the present, and an analysis of the main contemporary problems facing the East Timorese economy. Volume I considers East Timor from a chronological perspective, as an occupied country up to the point at which Indonesia leave.

The Creation of the East Timorese economy Vol. 2 : Birth of a nation
Published 2019
Very little has been written on the economy of East Timor since the country’s independence in 2002, and no comprehensive account exists of the economic history of the country. The former cannot be properly understood without a knowledge of the historical process that created the present-day situation. This research monograph is the first book to combine a historical analysis of the creation and development of the economy of East Timor from the earliest times to the present, and an analysis of the main contemporary problems facing the East Timorese economy. Volume II offers a detailed analysis of the economy of East Timor, of politics, fiscal policy and social progress. It pays particular attention to structural problems: employment generation and the lack of a modern sector, the modernization of agriculture and the management of the oil deposits in the Timor Sea. The first volume, available separately, considers East Timor from a chronological perspective, as a Portuguese colony, and a country occupied by Indonesia up to national independence in 2002. This book will appeal to economists, political scientists and social scientists in general as well as practitioners, since it focuses on down-to-earth problems that need to be solved for the economy to develop. The book can also be read by students both at the undergraduate and graduate levels and could be used for case studies in development.
