Matthew Hefler

Matthew Hefler is a Senior Research Fellow at the Ax:son Johnson Institute for Statecraft and Diplomacy based at the Center for Statecraft and Strategic Communication at the Stockholm School of Economics and Project Lead of the AJI Intelligence and Security Programme. His research examines the role of secret intelligence and security services in international diplomacy. He received his PhD as a Commonwealth Scholar in the Department of War Studies, King’s College London, where his work examined espionage and clandestine diplomacy in Allied relations during the Second World War. His doctoral research was shortlisted for the Michael Dockrill Prize in International History from the British International History Group (BIHG). At the SSE his research examines the role of secret intelligence and clandestine diplomacy in relations between the USA, Great Britain and France in the early Cold War.
