Abstract
Part of Symposium: Navigating the Evolving Dynamics of Control and Autonomy in Knowledge Work
This symposium explores the evolving dynamics of control and autonomy in contemporary knowledge work environments. Expanding beyond traditional actors such as managers and peers, we examine the growing influence of individual agencies, nonwork actors (e.g., families and friends), and the increasing use of generative AI technologies (e.g., ChatGPT) that possess their own agency in the workplace. The session highlights the interplays among organizations, workers, nonwork actors, and technologies in forging new forms of control and power, presenting a fresh framework for understanding control and autonomy in today’s hybrid and AI-driven work environments. Two discussants with expertise in organizational control among knowledge professionals will share their perspectives, connect the studies presented, and facilitate a discussion with the audience to explore directions for future research.
